The Carlington Summit

Disabled Persons Community Resources (DPCR) is pleased to announce the release of “A Guide to Accessible Housing / Guide au Logement accessible” for persons with disabilities in the region. In addition, DPCR invites nominations for the 18th Annual DPCR Accessibility Award.

One of the elements of DPCR's mission is to provide information about community resources and specialized programs and services. The Guide to Accessible Housing / Guide au Logement accessible is an example of DPCR's commitment to doing that. The guide will be available in April, 2000. It was developed to assist persons with disabilities, their families and service providers in finding accessible housing and/or resources related to their specific housing needs. The guide is bilingual.

In the guide, users will find advice on how to find accessible housing. There is also information on housing services, Special needs housing, subsidized housing and private market housing. Finally, the guide has a useful section on making your home more accessible. Users of the guide will find an extensive listing of housing providers from all areas of the region, with detailed information on their housing services and on how to contact them. Individuals interested in obtaining the guide can contact Disabled Persons Community Resources at (613) 724-5886.

The DPCR Accessibility Award is presented every year for efforts made in making buildings and facilities more accessible to persons with physical disabilities. Disabled Persons Community Resources is seeking nominations for the award from individuals who know of owners of new or renovated buildings who have worked hard to make them more accessible. DPCR is particularly interested in building owners who have removed barriers to mobility, vision and hearing impairments. The award is presented in three categories: Public, Commercial and Residential. Those wishing to submit nominations can do so to the Access Committee, Disabled Persons Community Resources, 1525 Carling Avenue, Lower Level, Ottawa, Ontario, K1Z 8R9 or fax them to (613) 724-5889.
